Code a new, never-released application, using one of the free versions of Microsoft Visual Studio Express.
Provide the source code for your application (but you do not need to release this publicly if you don’t want to).
The winning program must be freeware or donationware.
Code any kind of program you want.

Delphi Contest: Create Fancy Applications for Fame & Glory

Delphi.about.com is running a contest to pick a winner to be considered the fanciest Delphi application.

The prize is just fame & glory, to hold the title of 'Delphi Fancy-pants', to be the creator of the sweetest Delphi eye-candy..

The idea is pretty simple. Your Delphi application doesn't have to do anything useful, just look really amazing.

If you are like me, you like experimenting - creating pieces of Delphi code just to learn something new and create something interesting. If nothing else, to amaze your coworkers / family / yourself.
Sometimes the funny code I write actually does something smart - but most of the time - it's just to see if *this* can be done in Delphi.
Here's an idea that originated from this idea of mine: let's create a simple Delphi programming contest - the task is to code a fancy-do_nothing_smart application (a piece of code) in Delphi!
Let this one be for fame and glory - no material prizes will be given to any contestants - all of us will code for fame and glory - pure rivalry .

Nothing smart but fancy - and this is all what this contest is about: to create a "useless" application in delphi - one that is nice to see and one can learn something from it.
Hm .. ah .. ok. Rules are about to change! By looking at some of the "useless" applications I have created for delphi.about.com over the years ... it seems there are quite a few that are pure gems: Ruler is a must, Zoomer is just great. Ok, I'm not shy.

DonationCoder N.A.N.Y. 2008 Programming Challenge

This is a challenge for anybody with any kind of coding skills, even at the beginner level.

The challenge is to release a new freeware/donationware application on or before January 1, 2008.

It was a lot of fun last year and it got quite a bit of publicity. It was covered by ShellCity.net, CybernetNews.com, and ghacks.net, along with many other sites & blogs.

So if you can code, you might want to take the challenge this year.

I have been a member of DonationCoder for quite some time now, and it has been a wonderful experience for me.

One of the great things about this site and the community behind it, is the feedback you get from users, which helps you to improve your software and make it the best it can be. It is a kind of co-operative endeavor, with the end users and the developers working together as a team. You don't have any idea how great of an experience it is until you experience it for yourself, either as a user or a developer.

This entire team approach of software development brings the developer and end user together in a way that most people never have seen or experienced before. The results are amazing.

When you are coding for an unknown mystery user, it is easy to assume what he will want and like and what he will use your software for, having no clue what he really wants, likes, or needs. The reality is that you end up coding for yourself, and hoping the end user has the same tastes as you. It is quite easy to become disconnected and out of touch, when you are just coding and posting your creations on your own personal site for others to download, with no real interaction with the people you are writing for.

And as software users, it is easy not to think of developers as approachable people that will listen to you and consider your comments & suggestions seriously. It is also too easy to think of software as not having a human element behind its creation. This can lead people to not really care where their software comes from or appreciate the amount of work that goes into making it. It's this not caring attitude that can be an element contributing to the issues with software piracy that exist today. It's a bit harder for a user to bring themselves to pirate software, when they are hit with the reality that the stuff they are using actually has a 'face'.

Now before you get the wrong impression of what this is all about, let me explain what it isn't. This isn't a situation where a coder creates, users make demands, coder submits to demands, working himself to death and becoming resentful...or all he gets as feedback is bug reports or complaints. It's not like that at all.

And it's not a matter of users getting everything they want, which results in a bloated application full of useless features, that does everything except make your bed for you.

This is ongoing honest discussions, with not just feature requests, but an explanation of why they want the features, discussions between the developer and the users about which would be the best features to add and/or remove, and discussions on how the best way to present them would be.

Many of these discussions are between the users themselves, where they have to make up their minds and come to an agreement of what they really want & need, as a group. And the developer helps with guiding them and keeping things realistic and explaining what is or isn't possible, or what is or isn't within the limits of their coding abilities.

When something is outside the coder's abilities, there are other developers on the site that can be helpful and provide resources to learn from, and share some of their knowledge & experience so that you can do things you thought were impossible, and learn a lot in the process.

And the users really do appreciate the developers that will listen to them and be honest with them, with many showing that appreciation with donations. But don't do this for the money, because you will never get rich from freeware or donationware. Do it instead for the experience and the fun it will be, and the greater sense of connection to the people you are coding for, and how it will help to keep you from losing touch with your userbase...or the realities of real world software use.

So think about something you can make and accept the challenge today. You have about 3 weeks to come up with something you can release. And if you are out of ideas, you can take a look at the Coding Snacks section of their forum and maybe fill a request for a small tool that someone needs.

Background on the Current Sabre Situation

I decided that after putting up with Sabre hosting a fake TSC room for over a year that I would study his insane logic for doing so. He thinks that someone gave him my room, when it wasn't theirs to give, and that he now somehow owns the rights to it.

I applied that same logic by having freon give me his "Big Tits" room. I have as much rights to his room as he has to mine, right? If he can host a fake of mine for over a year, I can host a fake of his, right? If it is acceptable for him to do so, then it is acceptable for anyone else to do so too, right?

And he also stated this in reference to his hosting a fake of my room:

My channel was founded on February 17, 2004. It's name, logo, the website, etc was copyrighted to its creator (me) the moment I made the very first website for my channel, the very next day on February 18, 2004.

It was founded as a place of education, with its members helping each other with their knowledge and experience with programming, networking, web design, operating systems, and any other aspects of technology in which they have knowledge of, or are seeking knowledge of.

It is not a file trading room. It is a help and information exchange room where the help takes place live, right on your screen, in your chat window right when you need it. We help people educate themselves. We help you with your homework. We cater to your educational needs in any way that we reasonably can.

We are not a WinMX development room, although some members have done some developing for WinMX. Other members have done other types of developing that have absolutely nothing to do with WinMX.

At one time Sabre was a TSC member but he caused a large amount of trouble in TSC in the past and was kicked by me for disrespecting other members.

When Frontcode closed their peer caches and Sabre decided he needed a room to act as his home base for WinMX related stuff, he knew he couldn't use his own Big Tits room for that. He said it just wouldn't work. So he came to my room. He knew the reputation it had and that is what he wanted for his own.

He stated to me his intentions to take over my room whether I liked it or not and use it for his own purposes and not what it was intended for when I founded it. I told him to get his own damn room and Hollow even hosted one for him. But that wasn't good enough for him, he wanted TSC.

Rather than to let that happen and my channel become something it wasn't meant to be, I asked multi to shut it down. It was for the protection of my room, its reputation, and its members. It broke my heart to have to do that. That room was my home and the members were family.

Any room that has carried the name of mine that did not do so with my full approval does not subscribe to the principles it was founded on and therefore is a fake.

Yes, it is true that Sabre asked me if he could host it for me back in the late spring of 2006. But he lied to me and the members of TSC. He said he wanted things like it used to be with everyone working on various projects and discussing programming stuff...with all the old members back and us all getting along, like it was before he started trouble. He seemed like he was genuinely sorry for all the trouble he caused, as if he finally realized the damage he had done and wanted to make things right.

I was a fool to trust him and believe him, but it didn't last for long. When he revealed his true intentions, that was the end of any trust I had in him.

What he really wanted was to host a room that would attract people with programming skills that would be willing to create a new WinMX replacement that he could take full credit for and release as his own, making those that worked hard on it just a footnote in the credits, as if all they did was pour him some coffee while he was the one that did all the work. (If he is all he claims to be, why doesn't he just code it himself?)

He was angry at the people that were involved with PIE because they didn't have the programming skills he wanted for the next phase of his plans. TSC was where he thought he could find people to do that.

But he didn't care about the members needs. And he didn't understand that TSC is more than just a chatroom...it's a family...and we do care about each other, very much. That is one of the things that makes the room work.

He didn't care that Sable had just started a cat breeding business and needed help with how to build a website for it. That wasn't WinMX related and wasn't going to get him the new software written for him.

He didn't care that Boki was going to need help with Java to get her degree. That wasn't WinMX related and wasn't going to get him the new software written for him.

Sabre didn't care what the members wanted and needed. Things were going to be done his way, you were going to do what he said, code in the language he wanted you to, and work only on projects that he approved of.

No more homework help, no more help with your personal programming projects, no more help with the latest assignment they handed you at work, no more help with setting up your OS, no more help with getting rid of spyware and viruses, no more help with troubleshooting Linux issues, no more help getting your wireless to work, no more help understanding math, no more help with anything that didn't fit into his master WinMX plan.

He just wanted to use the members of TSC and throw them all away when he was done. He didn't care about them at all. He only cared about himself.

That is NOT in the spirit of the real TSC and I would have no part of it. I revoked his permission to host the room and I walked away stating that the room would reopen only when I could host it myself. But he refused to close it, thinking all of a sudden that some former member who hosted it for me had given it to him and now he owns it. It just doesn't work like that.

I did state that I would bring the room back and it would be what it was intended to be when I could host it myself. And that is what I did. And my members responded by filling my userlist. This is what they wanted. They didn't want Sabre's fake TSC and proved it over & over again this past year by visiting my channel and leaving Sabre all alone in his fake with nothing but his ego & his bots for company.

All of WinMX knows about this. They don't understand why Sabre keeps it open day after day and sitting in there all by himself. They think he's crazy. They make jokes about him. They don't understand why he doesn't just close the fake TSC room he hosts. I think it's because they are right...he is crazy.

So I figured if I can't beat him, I'll join him and use his very own logic until he decides his logic is flawed enough to quit using it himself.

So welcome to the new TSC...everything it has ever been, was intended to be, but now with more breasts. :-P

Sabre Uses WinMX Users as Pawns in his Childish Power Games

Today Sabre came into my channel to start trouble.

Sabre made a threat that he would close the caches and send me all PIE users and that I had better be ready with a patch to get them connected.

Then Sable made a sarcastic joke about how she was going to take over WinMX, and Sabre's reply was as if he had just decided to let her have it. (of course we don't really believe Sabre would give up all that power and walk away, do we?)

After that, Sabre (not Sable) posted a message to all PIE users, in the message window of their WinMX, that Sable has just taken over WinMX, which caused untold amounts of users to panic, thinking that the caches had been compromised and that Sable was the one that did it.

This was a very childish thing to do, in my opinion, and is just more proof that Sabre shouldn't be in any kind of control of any aspect of the network. He will abuse his power in any childish way he can and in the process poison the entire network.

Does he think his is the only cache on WinMX or that all WinMX caches are under his power tripping control?

He is using you, the users, as his pawns to play his childish games.

In my opinion, the PIE team should ask Sabre to step down before he abuses his power in some more childish ways and destroys everything for them. Unless of course they like the idea that he is discrediting them and making their patch users think that their cache has been compromised and that their patch is somehow not safe to use any more.

If this is the case, then they should just change their site to redirect to WMW's site and be done with it. Somehow I don't think that is what they really want....but that is almost what they are getting any way. But don't worry. WMW is ready and able to handle all 200,000 PIE users with their 9 caches that are not under the control of a mentally ill, power tripping man with the temper of a child.

PIE users are piling into WMW's channel, in droves, asking for help to remove the compromised PIE patch and replace it with theirs.

They are coming into Vladd's and wanting to know what is going on and about the compromised caches and if it is safe to be on WinMX any more.

It is Sabre that is making them run in fear. Neither Sable nor I have any control over the caches he runs. Neither Sable nor I can replace the notice on every PIE users message window like he can. This is all his childish actions as a reaction to his own logic being tested in the real world.

Sabre adds selective blocking of WinMX users to his peer cache

I am unable to connect to the network after Sabre (using a proxy & different username) leaves my channel in a fit of anger over me using his own logic to justify hosting a clone of his Big Tits room, just like he has hosted a clone of mine (TSC) for the past year. (around 9:30 am)
Other users confirmed that they never lost the ability to connect to the network by using his cache.
Blocking of my IP at the peer cache level is suspected.
After replacing every instance of his IP in my HOSTS file with a WMW cache IP, I connected immediately.
Blocking is confirmed. (2:43 PM)

Sabre has proven both the ability and the willingness to selectively block users from the network, at the peer cache level, and he will use that ability to block any users that he doesn't like or doesn't agree with, and thereby violating their rights to free speech by removing them and their chatrooms from the network.

I wonder what the ACLU would think about this.

I wonder what the **AA's would think about this.

I wonder what the WinMX community would think about his ability and willingness to block them from THEIR network, as if the network belonged to Sabre and Sabre alone.

In my eyes, this only confirms my belief in the need for more caches run by more groups, and more patches to utilize them.

Too much power in the hands of too few, over a network that should be in the control of its real owners (the users) is not a good thing. It promotes and encourages those that have that power to behave badly, abusing that power, and act as if they are the sole owners of the network.

The network should not be run by a few insecure people with big egos (and mental problems) that do it for power and to make themselves feel more important.

We should not be keeping our eggs in too few baskets and trust those baskets to a few power tripping mentally ill individuals. It is not good for our network and in the long run will cause its complete collapse.

It is time for the WinMX users to take back their network and rid it of those that seek to take it away from them. It is time to put a new system in place to spread out the power among more users and groups that have the best interest of the users and the network in mind, and not themselves.

Wake up before it's too late!

Are you concerned about making a WinMX patch open source?

To all those that think that making a patch open source will allow script kiddies to hijack applications or the network or people's pc's, I would like to point out this google search on dll injection.

Any script kiddie can do this search and read any instructions on how to accomplish this and plenty of sample code provided. KM probably did it himself while making his very first patch.

The methods of dll injection can be used for good or evil...as with any code, including code to create a simple text file to save program settings for your application.

It is basic programming skills to create a text file, with a particular name, in a particular folder on a hard drive. The HOSTS file is nothing more than a text file. If you can write code to make a file for saving your program's settings you can make a HOSTS file too. If you can write code to edit your program's settings file, you can edit a HOSTS file too.

Everything that would go into making a patch has already been done before in some form, and sample code for every aspect of it is already readily available. You could create a patch almost entirely by copying and pasting existing code that is already available to the public.

KM didn't invent the wheel when he made his patch. Nor was his the first to 'hijack' winmx to add features or functionality. Nor was WinMX the first application to ever be 'hijacked' with a dll.

This method of adding new features and functionality has been around for ages...it is even taught in schools. It is an important skill that most professional programmers need to know. In a corporate environment one often has to add specialized functionality to applications that are specific to that company's needs and are unavailable any other way.

There are plenty of plugins available for other applications without a built in plugin architecture that uses dll injection. How did they do it? Same way KM made his patch...same way the next patch will be made.

I do not see a reason for not making a patch open source... unless you are going to hide something nasty in it that you don't want your users to know about, because you intend on using their connection or pc for other evil purposes, and by making it open source they would easily find out about it and you would be exposed for the rat you truly are.

The only other reason to not make a patch open source is control. He who has the patch has the power to control those that want it if his is the only patch in town. Even if it is a crappy patch, he will have the power.

But once the code is released, he has no power. Anyone can then take that patch and improve it and make it better, solving any new problems that pop up on the network, and keep this network going forever.

Open source takes the power away from the coder who wants to be a god and gives it to the users, where in this case it rightfully belongs. Instead of one coder who thinks he is a god and can act like he owns winmx, you give that power to the users.

This network doesn't belong to one single entity any more. It stopped being one entity's 'property' when frontcode walked away. It is us, the users of winmx, every single one of us, that owns this network now. Anyone that tries to take control of the network by releasing a closed source patch is trying to take the network away from you.

Don't allow that to happen again. We have been there before, more than once. Do not be at the mercy of another Frontcode, KM, Sabre, or anyone else. Demand what rightfully belongs to you and hold on to it for dear life. Don't let anybody have the ability to shut down the network and leave you high & dry again.

Anybody that doesn't want an open source patch wants the network to die, wants the RIAA to win, and wants to take the network away from you because a closed source patch makes it much easier to accomplish that.

Someone from TSC was working on a patch to replace KM's and was threatened and told by Sabre that he better not make his patch open source or even release his patch to be used by others....that he better keep the patch for his own personal use and not to be used by the rest of the winmx community. Another member was threatened by Sabre too...he is working on a peer cache.

I wonder why he said that? Why is he threatening us and trying to stop us? Could it be that he thinks without a replacement to KM's patch that it makes him the god and new owner of winmx? That now the network belongs to him and only him?

Is this what you want? Do you want him to be your god? Do you want to be at his mercy? Do you want him to have power like that? Do you want him to have the ability to decide if winmx will continue or not? Do you want any single person or small group of people to have that kind of power?

I don't know about you, but this is not what I want and the sooner we have an open source patch and peer cache and eventually a replacement client with an improved protocol, the better better off we, the winmx community, will be.

Let's make the next patch OUR patch...OUR code...for OUR winmx and stop the madness that has plagued this network for the last 2 years and usher in the beginning of a new winmx era that will be free of the patch wars, accusations, and other crap of the past. A new winmx that works together as a team for the good of all of us...undivided...with a single purpose...to keep what is ours and make it grow.

That is why we are all still here right? Because winmx belongs to us? (I know it isn't the files...you can get the same files anywhere on any p2p.)

KB936357 is a Windows Update patch you have to watch out for and be careful.

It is microcode for the BIOS of certain affected systems.

Only systems with the following CPU's need this:

Mobile: Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor.
Desktop: Intel Core 2 Duo desktop processor, Intel Core 2 Quad desktop processor, and Intel Core 2 Extreme processor.
Server: Intel Xeon processors 3000, 3200, 5100, and 5300 series.

The problem with this patch is that it is installing itself on systems not affected and causing problems.

If you have your Windows Update settings set to automatically download and install patches, you might want to change this to downloading, but asking before installing.

When a new update downloads and you are asked, do not select the typical or express install. Choose the advanced option and check for this patch in the list.

If you don't have one of the affected CPU's, unselect this patch and do not install it.

You will have to do this every time, so keep the patch number handy so you'll remember the name of it.

I know of at least 1 person that ended up with this patch that didn't need it.

For one guy with an older P4 CPU, it messed up his router causing him to have a problem with it disconnecting every few hours.

Another guy...I haven't heard from him since he rebooted after an update tonight(he has an AMD64 CPU). I suspect he ended up with this patch and it may have caused problems, but I can't be sure at this time.

So please be careful with this one. Don't install it if you don't need it.

But if you do have one of the CPU's affected, please install it...you do need it, even if you are not currently having problems. There is a flaw in the listed processors that creates an exploitable vulnerability and your BIOS needs this patch to correctly deal with it and protect you.

The alternative to installing this patch on affected systems is to install a BIOS update from your motherboard manufacturer. Not all manufacturers have released a BIOS update to address the issue, and some require your system to have a floppy drive to install it. It is just easier to use the update from Microsoft for affected systems.

CrossMX Release Delayed Indefinitely

Due to a power accident in her street, BugHunter lost 2 PC's, almost all the electronic equipment in her house, and the wiring in her house was damaged.

It will be very costly for her to repair and replace what was lost and she doesn't know how long it will take.

She is currently without internet and is stuck using an old laptop (Pentium 90 with 16 Megs of ram).

She says she is still working on CrossMX, but with the speed of that laptop, this is going to take a long time.

Is StumbleUpon the Search Engine of the Future?

Let's face it...Google has serious flaws as a search engine. It is over-run with bogus pages of keyword lists, links to counterfeit sites, links to other inferior search pages, splogs, sites that try to hijack your browser and load your PC with spyware, and generally crappy unrelated results.

What you are looking for is burried in garbage. In order to find anything decent, related to what you are seeking, you have to set Google to show you 100 results per page instead of the default 10, and spend much more time scanning those results for what you are seeking.

What if there was a button on every page that let you vote whether the page was of quality or was crap?

And what if the quality pages moved up in rank as a result of your vote?

And what if the pages you labeled as crap fell in rank as a result of your vote?

And what if you could only vote for a page once, and only once? (you can always change your vote at some point in the future if the site became crap or became good)

And what if you came across a quality page that wasn't in your search engine's database and could add it yourself with just a click of a button?

And what if you could decide what keywords should be attached to pages?

What if StumbleUpon became a search engine?

It's not as far fetched as it might seem. At some point in the future, there will be enough SU members rating pages they come across and adding sites that they like to the database, that SU could actually make the jump from a simple amusement of random pages based on your interests, to a real search engine dishing out quality results based on rankings given by their userbase.

They could succeed where other search engines have failed.

I, for one, would love to see what would happen if SU did make the jump. It might be just the thing to replace Google as the top dog of search engines.

On Sunday, June 4, 2006, James Wendle Simpkins II, otherwise known as Nimda, passed away.

I don't know the full details of why he did it, but it was apparently suicide. He hung himself.

He was both a member of Las Vegas Hackers Club and The SourceCode, and I considered him to be a friend and part of my online family.

I am not going to make him out to be a saint, because he wasn't, but he seemed to be trying very hard to get his life together and go in the right direction. I don't know what went wrong.

He left behind a fiancee and 2 young children.

Intellectual property theft

I am angry.

I have been a part of many worthwhile chatrooms dedicated to programming...helping people get started. People that are trying to better themselves and their lives by learning, with many teaching themselves. Books are expensive and not everyone can afford them. But good resources are needed if you want to get anywhere in educating yourself.

I devote part of my time searching for the books needed for these people to use. Books that are freely available by publishers & authors that can help those budding young programmers learn what they need to know in order to someday create quality software you will use.

Why do I do this? Because I am a self taught programmer too. I know how hard it is to find quality material to learn from.

About a year ago I created a page of links to all the programming books I have found...nothing illegal...only stuff that is legally available for free. I take the time to remove dead links and add news ones. I take the time to make sure they are all legal. I take the time to sort them by language. I took the time to code a page with that list and upload it to my webspace and make it available.

I took the time to get an easy to remember domain name so it can be passed along to whoever needed access to the list.

I have friends that promoted the page to all their programming students and friends, friends that helped by passing me links to add books that they have found, University students passing along the link to my site at school to other students, helping them to improve their coding skills. It spread like wildfire...faster than I would imagine was possible. My page has appeared on slashdot and digg, and many other sites. I have never submitted this link to any search engine. I didn't have to.

My page currently has a Google ranking of 4/10. It has recieved over 15,000 hits since I added a counter back in March.

I must have done something good if all this is happening. It makes me feel good inside to know I have helped people by making this page. That was all I wanted to do...help people.

Then along comes some guy who decides that instead of doing his own searches and checking books to make sure they are good enough and legal enough to offer in his own list, it would be easier to just steal my work. He copied my entire list to his site and is passing it off as his own work. He even included my personal comment I made about a book on Ruby being the funniest thing I have ever seen. Pure copy & paste theft of all my months of work.

What he did is like someone taking sourcecode they found and removing the copyright & programmer's name and replacing it with their own and passing it off as their own work, not giving any credit at all to the original author. Pure plagerism.

Cailin has this hobby of hers where she takes coloring books made for children and really warps them up. She adds her own story line, usually based very loosly on the original printed one. She says the really cheap ones you buy at dollar stores are the best, since you can get about 3 of them for $1, meaning plenty more material to warp. They are usually the best also because the pictures and original story in them are a bit warped already and are just begging you to finish the job. She acquired an Easter one last night as a gift from our friends Zach and Gerald. Immediately she grabbed a black magic marker and began working. What follows is part 1 of a 3 part story resulting from her work. She is describing each page as it looks and the captions below them. Every page is altered a bit from the original and based on her observations of the original pictures, captions, and her demented mind:

I just got this in an email from someone. Thought I'd share it for laughs:

Remember that email that comes around from time to time about the tech who was fired because he lost his patience with a client when he discovered his hour on the phone with her computer not working was due to a power outage? Well, here is the reverse of that story except this one is true, and I know that it is true, because is just happend to me as I stupidly logged on to AOL's live tech help looking for assistance on Wednesday, August 18th, 2004 at 7:32 PM.

I was going to use a background of Martin's C code from the translator, but he felt the delphi one looked more organized and the bold text in it made it look much better.

Ad Banner?

Normally I am against any type of ads that annoy visitors (popups, banners, etc) and go to great lengths to ensure any site I build does not contain any visible ads to bother visitors. I have even hidden the Google ads banner at the top of this page. I like Google's ad banner and I consider it an exception since the ads try to be relevant to the content of the page, but the one on this page is ugly and the colors don't match right. If I change the colors of this site to blue & white, I will consider revealing it for you to see.

Taking this into consideration, I am looking for feedback related to something I added today: our first ad.

This is not an ordinary ad. This one may make some of you with coding experience some extra cash. There is a website called Rent a Coder that offers programmers the chance to bid on projects that other people need done. They have an ad box, that I have added below the member site links, that lists recent job offers that you can bid on.

If you like it or think it's a good idea, it will stay. If you don't like it and can tell me why, I will consider removing it.

Weird N.J., Celebrating The Odd State of Mind

Someday centuries from now, when people want to know about the great
state of New Jersey around the dawn of the millennium, they will turn not
to history books or time capsules but to Weird N.J., a magazine that
captures the spirit of a varied, beautiful and truly exotic place.

Here, in the publication created by Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran,
decaying drive-ins and huge rooster statues and men with pompadours
are things of beauty. In their New Jersey, some place called Midgetville
is always just around the corner, and so is albino village, where the albinos
are murderous. Everybody in the state has a story. Some guy claims he has
Hitler's toilet seat.

Here is New Jersey, explained.

Other states have their eccentricities, but few have New Jersey's reputation.
You don't hear any good jokes about Connecticut. New Jersey stands for our
flashier, coarser self, the self that lets its dark roots show and doesn't
care.
Think of New Jersey and think of girls shoving past each other in nightclubs.
Think of roadside diners with Greco-Roman facades and mauve vinyl seats,
their counters laden with heavy Danishes wrapped in plastic. Think of all
those
30-year-old guys living in their mothers' basements, working out every night,
cornering other guys in bars and asking them to step outside.

"We can take any [expletive] that people throw at us," Sceurman says.

Because of Mark and Mark, cranks are not friendless. In this New Jersey,
everybody's a conspiracy theorist and everybody believes in UFOs.

Today, the men are touring southern New Jersey. They visit a man who
has 10,000 glass telegraph insulators mounted on telephone poles around
his lawn like alien trees, and they stop by a gold-colored church shaped like
a pyramid, known as the Temple of Hope and Knowledge, which is now up for
sale. (A tattered sign recommends that worshipers attend "the service for
one to beg for mercy and hope.") They go to a roadside Catholic shrine called
Our Lady of the Highway, which is located in a triangular building smaller
than
a Taco Bell, next to a Sunoco station.

They stop for lunch at an empty roadside bar whose desolation they find
appealing, and whose menu offers only one dessert item: "Jell-o Shots $1.00."

They hunt for a couple of roads they've heard about: Unexpected Road
and No Name Road. When they find them, they get out of Sceurman's
jeep and take pictures like giddy boys.

"We get joy out of the most mundane things," Sceurman says.

Mark and Mark could have grown up in Providence and started a magazine
called Weird R.I., but they didn't. Could there be some cosmic connection
between their geography and their mission, some power that New Jersey
exerts over its inhabitants, driving them to celebrate their eccentricities?

It is an old state, so it's had plenty of time to build weirdness. It is the
nation's densest state, capable of cramming much weirdness into a small
space. It has wilderness: dirt roads running through the Pine Barrens, and
the Meadowlands, where the dead keep quiet. It has lonely warehouses off
turnpike exits, and casinos in Atlantic City, where it is always daylight and
old people carry their dreams in plastic cups. And, of course, it has that
northern stretch that sits under a sulfurous cloud, and every time you drive
through it, you look at your boyfriend like it's his fault, those beans he had
for lunch.

Is there any less graceful word than Hackensack? (Or Mahwah? Or Ho-Ho-Kus?
Or Peapack?)

You tease the state and it gives you the finger. You don't feel bad for it the
way you feel bad for much-maligned West Virginia, because New Jersey can
take care of itself. Notice how Jerseyans excise half of their state's name,
as if one word is enough: Just "Jersey." (As Sceurman points out, New Yorkers,
for all their attitude, never call their state "York.")

Sceurman, 47, a quiet, bearded man, grew up in Essex County, hearing
stories of a nun encased in glass on the side of a road, and of a place
called Heartbeat Road, where passersby can supposedly still hear a
murdered person's heart. When he was about 9, Sceurman's older brother
tried to scare him by driving him to an area in Clifton that was supposedly
home to albino residents who -- local legend said -- would eat strangers
venturing into their midst.

Sceurman has always had a love for things squalid and paranormal. On a
date in the early '80s, en route to a hot dog stand, he diverted the car
through a dump to explore. His date married him.

He worked for about 20 years as a graphic artist for an alternative music
magazine that he still co-owns. In the late '80s, he began sending out a
newsletter to friends, updating them on his life and including a section on
strange things he wanted to explore in the state. After a story about the
newsletter in a local paper around 1993, Weird N.J. acquired a small fan
base, who eagerly read Sceurman's thoughts on "The Glowing Grave of
Montville," "Interesting Hikes in Industrial Waste" and "Mysterious Bigfoot
Sightings in the Northwest Corner." Sceurman offered recommendations
on unique bars (Mom's Place in Wallington: "The best shuffleboard") and
published muddy photographs of things like the town of Sea Breeze, "The
most desolate place in New Jersey."

Mark Moran, 43, a graphic artist who'd also grown up in Essex County --
fascinated by tales of a nearby Mafia family compound, and by a Bavarian
style castle that supposedly hosted satanic orgies -- started contributing
photographs to what was then essentially a pamphlet in the mid-'90s. Around
1996, Moran and Sceurman joined forces. Their magazine comes out twice
yearly, selling for $4 an issue on newsstands. A recent issue, No. 21, has
sold 60,000 copies.

There's a Web site, www.weirdnj.com, and a book called "Weird N.J." that
came out last September and has sold 100,000 copies. Their next book,
"Weird U.S.," is scheduled to come out in October, and they've shot a pilot
episode for a show of the same name for the History Channel. Sceurman
says they only began turning a profit in the last two years.

Their small office, located in a historic battery factory in downtown West
Orange, features a painting of a three-eyed devil on velvet, a Nixon poster
and an autographed photo from Butch Patrick, who played Eddie on "The
Munsters." There are books with titles like "The Big Book of Freaks."

Sceurman says the office is ideally situated to pick up twin scents that
seem to encapsulate the ethos of New Jersey.

"The wind's blowing west, it's the dump," he says, sounding pleased to be
able to share this. "When it blows east, it's the Dunkin' Donuts."

If Weird N.J. stands for anything, it stands for giving voice to the unheard,
the artists, the brave souls who dare to live differently.

The elderly are the most creative. An old man builds a pyramid of 200
bowling balls, and an old lady crafts lawn sculptures from thousands of
milk jugs. One time she makes an Easter bunny; one time a 75-foot rainbow
with a pot of gold at the end. She is thrilled to have visitors, even when
she's
not expecting them.

When you show up on your tour of South Jersey tourist destinations, she
greets you enthusiastically, wearing only a towel.

She is Josephine Stapleton, 70, a bus driver who lives in Mays Landing, not
far from Atlantic City. In front of her house: approximately 1,000 one-gallon
milk jugs, painted and arranged into an American flag. Also: some split tires
that are supposed to act as flower planters but that are currently empty;
plus concrete blocks lining the grass. In the back yard: a rusting trailer, a
pile of tires, a doghouse with the word "Spot" scrawled on it, and a bathroom
sink on a tree stump, acting as a birdbath. There is also Stapleton's alter
ego,
a dummy made entirely of milk jugs, wearing a mop wig and a housedress.
She changes its outfits with the seasons.

"This is Jugabelle!" Stapleton says on a recent afternoon, after she has
changed from her towel into a purple outfit. "Everybody loves her to death."

Sceurman trains a video camera on Stapleton and interviews her for the
benefit of Weird N.J. fans.

"Have you ever met any other jug bottle artists?" he asks.

"People came to me and they wanted to know how to start it," Stapleton
says. "And I said, it's a lot of hard work, so if you don't wanna work, don't
start it."

Sceurman and Moran spend whole days visiting people like the Milk Jug Lady.

If you study old issues of Weird N.J., you find that certain phenomena are
described over and over. There are the wavers -- old men, mostly, who sit
on lawns or at roadsides and greet passing cars. There's been Wavin' Willie
and Wavin' Joe, Dave the Wave, the Birdman of the Pulaski Skyway, an Elvis
impersonator named Ed, and some guy that Moran calls Do-It.

"This guy's a trip," Moran says. "He runs down the street jogging, and when-
ever he sees you, he throws up his arms and yells a big 'Do it!' "

There are the collectors: the guy who collects raisin boxes, and likes to
dress like the Sun-Maid girl, and someone else who collects the ink fillers
from pens. A feature called Cemetery Safari chronicles the state's most
eccentric graves and monuments: a stone armchair, a life-size stone
Mercedes-Benz.

Not everything can be witnessed, of course -- chiefly, the paranormal
incidents that Weird N.J. chronicles. There is a haunted mental hospital
where an abandoned piano supposedly still plays; there is a Jersey Devil
that's always bothering people. Sceurman and Moran throw everything
into their magazine indiscriminately, giving equal respect to fact and myth.

"If we printed the real story, we wouldn't have a magazine," Sceurman says.

And really, does it matter if the "Possessed Pole of Passaic Park," a street
sign that supposedly rocks back and forth, is actually possessed? Isn't it
enough that people pose for pictures with it?

Even though the Marks are in their forties, this is a publication in some way
created by teenagers, possessed of cars and burdened by boredom. Weird N.J.
is a collage of suburban legends. Even those of us who didn't grow up in New
Jersey have spent afternoons looking for monsters in our neighbors' back
yards. We've all tried -- and failed -- to find the albino village.

Every issue features letters from readers. They write in with stories,
like the tale of "The Sock Man of Middletown," who supposedly would pay
teenagers $5 per pair of dirty socks, and "The Lump Man of Butler," who
had a huge lump between his eyes. They pose questions: "You guys ever
check out the crematory in Hightstown?"

Among the hard-core fans is William Angus, 33, a phone company customer
service agent from Bergen County who ventures out to find Weird N.J.
landmarks between three and 10 times a month. He has seen an abandoned
American military jet decaying in the woods, and an abandoned mental
hospital near a morgue, where an apparition may or may not have jumped
into one of his photographs. Sometimes he takes his 5-year-old son on
cemetery trips.

"I am obsessive-compulsive, and I don't say that as a layman; I have been
diagnosed," Angus says. "When I have a whole day, I leave at 7 o'clock in
the morning and I might not be back until 8, 9, 10 o'clock."

Sceurman and Moran tend to steer clear of their fans. They get a lot of
mail from prisoners, for example. When the phone rings one afternoon in
the office, nobody picks it up. Mark Moran eyes the caller ID.

"That could be Neil," he says, referring to a guy who sends them creepy
letters, written all in capitals with no punctuation.

In some way, such letters are reassuring. They are proof that, despite
New Jersey's relatively small size, there are vast tracts of odd beauty
still to be explored. Moran and Sceurman don't worry about running out
of material.

"As long as there's New Jersey and people living in it, there will be a weird
element to it," Moran says.

As a followup to a recent post about a nasty little virus situation that can occur when visiting some un-named major websites, I am supplying the following from zdnet:

Update: Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection.
The researchers believe that online organized crime groups are breaking into Web servers and surreptitiously inserting code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. Those flaws allow the Web server to install a program that takes control of the user's computer.

Late Thursday, Microsoft advised customers to increase their browser security to the highest settings, although that could cause some Web site functions to stop working.

The extent of the attacks is unknown, but the security community has seen numerous cases of personal computers infected when the user merely visits a Web site.

"It is not epidemic, but it is being seen," said Alfred Huger, senior director of engineering for security company Symantec. "Do we think it is serious? Yeah. It's a concern and it's insidious."

The tactic is not new. Earlier this month, an independent security researcher found an aggressive advertising program, known as adware, that installed itself onto a victim's computer via the same two flaws in Internet Explorer. A large financial client called in Symantec in late April after an employee's system had been infected when he used Internet Explorer to browse an infected Web site. Last fall, a similar attack may have been facilitated through a mass intrusion at Interland, said sources familiar with that case.

This time, however, the flaws affect every user of Internet Explorer, because Microsoft has not yet released a patch. Moreover, the infectious Web sites are not just those of minor companies inhabiting the backwaters of the Web, but major companies, including some banks, said Brent Houlahan, chief technology officer of NetSec.

"There's a pretty wide variety," he said. "There are auction sites, price comparison sites and financial institutions."

The Internet Storm Center, which monitors Net threats, confirmed that the list of infected sites included some large Web properties.

"We won't list the sites that are reported to be infected in order to prevent further abuse, but the list is long and includes businesses that we presume would normally be keeping their sites fully patched," the group stated on its Web site.

The group also pointed out that the malicious program uploaded to a victim's computer is not currently detected as a virus by most antivirus software. With no patch from Microsoft, that leaves Internet Explorer users vulnerable. A representative of the software giant was not immediately available for comment on when a patch might be available.

Researchers believe that attackers seed the Web sites with malicious code by breaking into unsecured servers or by using a previously unknown vulnerability in Microsoft's Web software, Internet Information Server (IIS). When a victim browses the site, the code redirects them to one of two sites, most often to another server in Russia. That server uses the pair of Microsoft Internet Explorer vulnerabilities to upload and execute a remote access Trojan horse, RAT, to the victim's PC. The software records the victim's keystrokes and opens a back door in the system's security to allow the attacker to access the computer.

Currently, researchers have two theories as to who is behind the attacks. The Internet Storm Center pointed to the similarities between these attacks and previous virus epidemics aimed at co-opting computers for use in illegal spam networks.

"There is quite a bit of evidence that what we are seeing is yet another technique for spreading and installing 'spamware,'" the group stated on its site. "We don't see any evidence that this attack is related to the construction of a DDoS (distributed denial of service) network or other type of typical zombie-based attack group."

However, Symantec believes that the attacks last fall and in April, which the current one most resembles, were conducted by online organized crime groups from Russia. The theory is supported not only by the fact that the server storing the malicious code is in Russia, but also by the sophisticated nature of the attacks, Symantec's Huger said.

"It's a group of people that have resources to bring to play," he said, adding that the attack programs were not amateur material. "The code wasn't pulled off a Web site; it was custom."

Meanwhile, the average Internet surfer is left with few options. Besides choosing the highest security settings for Internet Explorer, Windows users could download an alternate browser, such as Mozilla or Opera. Mac users are not in danger.

NetSec's Houlahan advocated drastic action.

"I told my wife, unless it is absolutely necessary and unless you are going to a site like our banking site, stay off the Internet right now," he said.

CHICAGO (June 25) - Government and industry experts warned late Thursday of a mysterious, large-scale Internet attack against thousands of popular Web sites. The virus-like infection tries to implant hacker software onto the computers of all Web site visitors.

Industry experts and the Homeland Security Department were studying the infection to determine how it spreads across Web sites and find adequate defenses against it.

"Users should be aware that any Web site, even those that may be trusted by the user, may be affected by this activity and thus contain potentially malicious code," the government warned in one Internet alert.

The mysterious infection appeared to target at least one recent version of software by Microsoft Corp. to operate Web sites, called its Internet Information Server, popular among businesses and organizations.

A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment immediately.

Experts said the attack's effects were unusually broad but weren't substantially interfering with Internet traffic.

"While this is significant, it has no impact on the operation of the Internet," said Marcus Sachs, who helps run the industry's Internet Storm Center in Bethesda, Md.

Deciding to upgrade to AOL DSL is a very bad idea. When I got my package through the post I set it up the way the guide said, and it kept disconnecting, installing it on my laptop with nothing on but WinXP it worked perfect, then installing Sygate onto the laptop it disconnected, thus finding out AOL has issues with Sygate Firewall, then pissed off needing a firewall I resorted to the free one AOL offer to download. Recently, I tried sending an attachment through gmail which failed. I also tried sending an attachment from a non-gmail account to a gmail user...it also failed. Some of the attachments I sent went through, while some others didn't. I contacted google about it, thinking it was some sort of bug. This was their reply:

users cannot send or receive executable files.

Gmail does not accept executable files, even if they are sent in a zipped
format. If someone tries to send this type of message to your Gmail

There is a way to easily get around this:
If you are sending executables, send a .rar file. It seems their scanners are just like AOL's and can't see into a .rar file to read it's contents.

Keeping this in mind, it would also be best for your privacy to send all attachment as .rar, no matter what email service you are using. Why let your ISP or anyone other than the intended reciever know what is being sent? That kind of snooping is equal to spyware, if you ask me, and all the major email providers are doing it. They call it "scanning for viruses" or "protecting you". I call it an invasion of privacy and a denial of service.

OOB :: This stands for "Out Of Band" data. This is used to crash computers. You must send people cheep recordings of sucky bands like, Green Day, Bush and Yani. Thier computer phreaks out so bad it crashes.

Macintosh :: The world's greatest O/S, j00 must have it to hax0r.

O/S :: This means "Operating System" like Macintosh. (Windows is NOT an Operating System... it's just sucky)

AOL :: The worlds fastest, most reliable connecting ISP. Also owned by Microsoft... the best maker of software out there (rumor is you can buy souls from them too... but I just hax0r them)

ISP :: This means "Internet Service Provider" IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE ONE MORON!! sheesh.

Phreax0ring :: Phreaking is the art of scaring people with your computer. (i.e. tellling them you are reading their hard drive right now, like I am doing to you). It is a form of hax0ring... only the super l33t can phreax0r.

FTP :: This is "File Transfer Protocol" and you must have it to hax0r, otherwise how will you download your l33t viruses you wrote onto other people's computers? Most stores sell it, I reccomend buying it at Radio Shack, they have everything.

RAP :: The world's worse music... you cannot be l33t if you listen to rap, you can only be semi-l33t.

Phat :: A term l33t hax0rz use to describe their most righteous hacks.

Lamer :: People who don't know how to hax0r. People who can hax0r but never tell anyone about it. People who don't use AOL.

l33t :: Stands for "leet" short for "elite" All hax0rs know this and must use it when describing themselves to others. (i.e. I AM l33t PH33R MY SKI11Z)

K-Rad :: This is a super l33t hax0r. This can also be used as a descriptive word, (i.e. That phat syte was K-RAD).

What in cheesy poofs name is 'Phreax0ring'?? Well... had you read Lesson Three of My Hax0r Arkivez, you would have had a head start, but I can't expect everyone to be as tedious and as dedicated to hax0ring as me. After all, I am a very notorious hax0r d00d with lots of chix0rs after me. I spit on the government, and they offer me jobs. They ph33r m3.

Phreaking is the art of scaring people with your computer. (i.e. tellling them you are reading their hard drive right now, like I am doing to you). It is a form of hax0ring... only the super l33t can phreax0r.

This definition was taken from Lesson Three of My Hax0r Arkivez in case you thought I was making this up.

The art of scaring people is a vrey fine one, and only truly l33t hax0rz can do it. It is very dangerous for me to post this section, as many lamers will try the things listed in these lessons, and get caught. I must warn you tho, I will deny the existance of cheese and smelly shoes, and that you were stupid enough to keep reading... So all you non-l33t types... stop reading NOW.

Gmail, googles attempt at an email service, offers 1gb(1000mb) of space, perfect for storing emails. email it self is VERY heavy in Javascript, so need a new browser, April had to use Firefox, and I can use either IE or Firefox, Mozilla 1.6 doesn't work with it(or it might just be me). Its amazing that they offer 1gb and being free... but people on ebay are sellign them @ $100 dollars, price of one of them, just the invite. Guess people really want it. Must be kinda foolish for people to pay the money, then soon they will be public and let people signup... or they might stay on invite, i wish that they would, because of spam reasons, etc... ya know... Got my gmail account today, Thank you april for the invite ;)

New WinMX Patch Available

Multi has made a new patch for winMX that will protect not only from the usual RTF crap but also offers protection from KM's latest little toy that floods rooms with fake people and rapidly changing names.

He has also added a feature to display a person's IP when they enter the room, similar to the one RCMS displays.

Hopefully in the near future he will be able to add some more useful features to it that will make it an ideal, truly backdoor free, alternative to RCMS.

Martin is Missing?

He intends on really concentrating on his studies and doing well. He will return as soon as he is in uni and all settled in and has an internet connection. (probably September)

Now that the hot and sticky weather has returned you might be thinking of heading out to the shore to cool off. Well, if you're thinking of taking a dip anywhere near Little Egg Harbor, you might want to think again...

RETURN OF THE BLOB: THAT ICKY SMELLY MYSTERY CRUD REAPPEARS IN LITTLE EGG HARBOR

In our newest issue (#22) we have exclusive photographs of a large mysterious blob that appeared in a Little Egg Harbor tributary last July. The Blob, (the size equivalent to a Honda Civic) was netted and hauled out to the Great Bay and supposedly disposed of by sinking the stinking mass of slimy goop.

But it seems that a "Son Of Blob," a smaller, but just as gooey, putrid mass has surfaced in another waterway in the lagoon community of Beach Haven West, miles away from the original Blob encounter.

Son Of Blob is only about 10 feet in diameter, but is terrorizing the neighborhood nevertheless. Son Of Blob was last seen lingering in the corner of a bulkhead off Jonathan Drive.

"It's miserable, ugly and disgusting," said resident Nancy Olivia in the Press Of Atlantic City (4/27/04). Olivia called Ocean County officials to say "I went to work today, and I have a Blob in my back yard!"

The NJ Department of Environmental Protection, the NJ State Police and Ocean County Health Department have been called in to inspect the mass, and samples have been taken. The inspectors believe that it was not the same blob that appeared in Little Egg Harbor last year, but still do not have a clue as to what it consists of.

So far no such action to contain the blob and remove it has been taken. It is still at large––BEWARE!

NEVER name your C drive WINDOWS

For the longest damn time I couldn't figure out what was ailing my comp. My scheduled tasks wouldn't run. I had problems installing certain programs, upgrading some, etc. I finally found out why. If you name your C drive's volume label WINDOWS, and you have windows installed in a folder also named WINDOWS on your C drive, it can cause a conflict. Your OS won't know where to locate some files. That was the case with me. Name it something else, like PRIMARY or something.

Now that I got that settled, I may try to upgrade IE again...or maybe not :-/

Christopher Garlan: Actually, I don't know why this is not working because you've tried two computers already and both can't even ping the router. The funny this is, both have internet connection behind the router. If you can't ping the router, you should also have no internet when connected to it.

Christopher Garlan: If you've already tried to hard reset the router and tried to remove the modem from it and you still can't ping it when you have not firewall, I suggest you have this router replaced. The reason is we can't reflash its firmware if we can't ping it.
Phillip: i never updated the firmware
Christopher Garlan: If you can't ping the router, you can't update the firmware, which is the only solution I can think off.
Phillip: hmm, why would updating the router do anything?
Christopher Garlan: That's the solution when you can't access the router's setup page, and you have internet behind it.
Phillip: so, you are saying, you are using a little program that you choose a radio button that is the closest to my problem?
Phillip: and....there are no other avenues?
Christopher Garlan: No we don't have such programs, all the solutions I gave you were coming stright from my head, based on training and experience.
Phillip: well, then you are also saying, that you dont know?

Change of Plans

I had a discussion with nimda concerning my idea of adding buttons linking to member sites on the left menu. He raised some very valid points.

If I allow everyone to supply a URL to a button and add it,

It will look like a bunch of ads and take away from the attractiveness of the site by spoiling the colors & style.
Many of you have sites located on free servers that don't allow linking of images.
Since the graphics would be located all over the web, it will cause the page to load very slowly.
Many of you may have no clue how to compress a graphic to a small size, which will also cause slow loading times.

I decided to still link to member sites, but I will host the graphics on the same server as the logo...that solves problems 2 & 3....and I will make the buttons....that solves problems 1 & 4.

I already made a button for every member with their "name" on it, now all I will need is the URL of your site. Some of you won't need to supply this, as I already know where the site is that will be linked to your button.

Any member that has a site and wants a link, please click the comments link below and leave a note with the name of the site and it's URL.

By entering the room, or wearing a TSC tag, you agree to the following. If any rule is broken, you subject yourself to a possible kick, ban and/or loss of membership.

1. No kiddie porn!! No exceptions!! No excuses will be accepted!! Penalty will be immediate and permanent ban from the room and we will forget you exist!!

2. No distribution of malware of any kind. This means viruses, trojans, rebooters, or any other software meant to do a computer or person any kind of harm. You are also not allowed to distribute these outside of the room or outside of WinMX if you are a member. No deliberate crashing of any rooms anywhere on WinMX. All reports of such activity will be taken very seriously. Our room does not need that kind of reputation. Also, no using other script kiddie tools like flooders and such.

3. No abusing or insulting people. This means, but is not limited to, calling people names like "lamer", "idiot", "asshole", "moron", etc. No racist remarks either. Be nice to each other. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything. There are times when this will be excused...like when it is obvious to ALL that it was a joke.
This rule even applies to people that enter the room with the intent to cause trouble...don't give them any fuel by giving them the reaction they seek. Contact an admin to take care of the problem.

4. No harassing people with 0 files. There is not a file sharing requirement to be in the room. Some of the best sharing is done through conversation...the relaying of information. Some people can't share, their ISP's have sharing blocked. Is it better to offer files people can't download or is it better to be honest about it and not offer anything at all? Also, some people are new and don't know how to share yet, or may be hosting a room and be unable to share.

5. No giving out "hacking info". This means any info used for the purpose of harm to another person's computer or web accounts. This includes info on how to crash rooms. This is not the room for that and we do not want it to get the reputation as such.

6. No multiple memberships. If you need to be in the room with 2 different names, use the same number for both.

7. Wear the tag properly or don't wear it at all. If you must wear another room's tag, ours goes first or don't wear it. We are all part of an array. That is the way the tag was designed. When worn properly, we all line up real nice. When you try to decorate the tag, or use other characters that don't belong, or another tag first, you are in effect a JavaScript error in need of correction. We would rather you not wear the tag at all, than be an error. We don't require you to wear it, it's an OPTION. But if you are going to wear it, please do it right.

8. Try to help anyone that enters if you can. That is what this room is for. Friends helping friends. We are all friends, even if we are strangers and it is the first time someone is in the room. And treat people that need help with dignity. We are not born knowing this stuff. Refer to this link to know how to help people properly:

[UPDATE] these guys are working for Wind-Up Records...a small label that is an RIAA member. When I was able to browse a few of the ones sharing files (not the annoying ones that get in your queue, but others of same usernames that you find on song searches) all the files they were "sharing" had one label in common, Wind-Up.

What EXACTLY is a hacker?

HACKER is a slang term for a computer enthusiast. Among professional programmers, the term hacker implies an amateur or a programmer who lacks formal training. Depending on how it used, the term can be either complimentary or derogatory, although it is developing an increasingly derogatory connotation.

The pejorative sense of hacker is becoming more prominent largely because the popular press has co-opted the term to refer to individuals who gain unauthorized access to computer systems for the purpose of stealing and corrupting data. Hackers, themselves, maintain that the proper term for such individuals is script kiddie.

soooo...essentually, a hacker is a self taught programmer.

NOT someone that breaks into your computer and messes up your stuff.
NOT someone that writes viruses and passes them to other people.
NOT someone that tries to stick a trojan on your computer to steal your passwords and personal information.
NOT someone that that launches an attack on you to try to kick you offline.
NOT someone that crashes your chatroom.
NOT someone that will try to hurt you in any way.

That is a script kiddie...and REAL hackers HATE script kiddies!!

REAL hackers are the ones that bring you things such as plugins for WinMX; like Bendmx, RCMS, KickIt, patches for vulnerabilities (like the riched32.dll to fix RTF), to stop script kiddies from crashing you or messing up your room.

REAL hackers write games, useful tools, and other programs in their spare time that you enjoy...some you might even feel you can't live without.

REAL hackers write entire operating systems...like Windows or Linux. (yes, Microsoft DOES employ real hackers)

REAL hackers tinker with their computers and discover bugs in software, and maybe some vulnerabilities, and do what they can to fix them to make everyone's life safer and more enjoyable while using a computer.

REAL hackers are just ordinary people...moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters...that never went to school to learn programming. They learned it some other way (usually the hard way).

So the next time someone says hackers are evil, you now know better and can educate them as to what the TRUE meaning of the word "hacker" is.

Well, I finally went and did it...and now to explain why:

LVHC, by it's nature attracts the wrong kind of people. The name of the room and the room topic invites all the crap on WinMX. Many of the long time members have tried really hard to get rid of the negative image that the room has. It's hopeless...the crap still comes in. It seems the rules we tried to make, the friendly atmosphere, the good image we were after as being the best room on WinMX is only appreciated by those working hard to create it. Since multi can't run true programming at this time, due to personal reasons, I had to do something. I found myself being dragged down by the crap. I found myself behaving badly...becoming crap myself. I didn't like it. I had to get out. I had to go somewhere else. Since true programming wasn't open, the logical thing was to start another room.

The SourceCode will be like the old LVHC Basement Club. People will be given a chance. People will be welcome in the room as long as they can behave and act mature. People that are eager to learn will find help and encouragement. Nobody will be kicked or banned without a good reason. The rules that multi originally posted for LVHC will apply. As soon as I get a copy from him I will post them on this site, and maybe add a few of my own. A few people from LVHC will not be allowed in the room till I can see that they have matured some and are willing to live by the rules and not be a threat to the spirit of the room. They know who they are and I do not have to mention them by name.It is not my intention to upset them and start a "war". My intentions are just to have a better place to be, and provide a better alternative than the current LVHC situation.

Membership is not currently open till I have my admin list established. There will be no rank, but there will be a numbering system. The numbers will be based on when you joined, rather than how much brains or skills you have. Nobody is better than someone else and the ego trip that rank causes is bad for the room. The top ten numbers will be reserved for my admins only because it will make it easier to know who they are to everyone else. I am [01]...it's my room. Code is [02]...he's hosting for me (thanks). Kiz is [03]...she was the next one I asked. Martin is [04]...a good guy I can trust and agrees with what I am trying to do here. [00] is reserved for multi out of the respect I have for him as a person. That will put his name at the top of the list, where I personally feel he belongs. The rest of the spots in the top 10 have yet to be filled.
